We Need Your Help
The modern dilemmas facing Central Appalachia today continue to be challenging and complex against the backdrop of chronic and systemic poverty. Rising gas prices are hitting families especially hard in Central Appalachia, because of its rural setting and disparity income. Median incomes continue to lag behind the rest of the nation by 30% on average. In the most distressed areas, the average family earns as little as 40 cents for every $1 earned by the typical American family. As a result, a staggering one-third of the region’s children are living in poverty.
These low incomes limit opportunities to grow wealth through savings or investment. Homeownership has emerged as the primary vehicle for families to build wealth over their lifetime. But as building cost soar in rural areas, new housing development is becoming impractical, and much of the existing stock is in such substantial disrepair that it is not fit for habitation. Over 30,000 homes in our region still do not have complete indoor plumbing. In all we estimate that over 100,000 families in Central Appalachia are living in unacceptable housing conditions.
