Manufactured Housing Compact Expands into Virginia
Helping Overcome Poverty’s Existence (H.O.P.E.) is blazing a trail in Virginia as the first nonprofit to successfully construct a home using a manufactured unit sold by Frontier Housing, the exclusive non-profit dealer of Clayton Homes. As the leader of FAHE’s manufactured housing initiative, Frontier offers high quality and energy efficient homes, to be set on a FHA permanent foundation and titled as real estate, maximizing long-term appreciation.
Frontier began selling Clayton ENERGY STAR qualified manufactured homes in 2005 when it became Kentucky’s first nonprofit dealer. With the support of Frontier’s expertise, H.O.P.E. set out to replicate this success in Virginia. Along the way, they engaged and educated state and local partners on the benefits and value-added features that distinguish these homes from the rest of the crowd. Impressed by the quality and potential of the program Virginia Housing Development Authority contributed $4,000 in support of H.O.P.E.’s efforts and affordable financing to help keep the buyer’s payment under $500.
The manufactured housing initiative is one of FAHE’s Berea Performance Compacts. By starting the Berea Performance Compacts, FAHE and its Members committed themselves to building on individual strengths to accomplish more together. H.O.P.E., Frontier Housing, and the compact’s other participants are driving a systemic change in the delivery of quality manufactured homes.
In addition to financing, FAHE secures sponsorship for the compact, including a grant from CFED’s I’M HOME Initiative. To learn more about CFED visit their website: www.cfed.org.
